TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS AND WHY YOU STARTED IT
I started my business 12 years ago out of desperation. I had three very young children (all under the age of four) and $64k of credit card debt that my husband didn't know about. A real job wasn't feasible, simply because the child card costs alone would kill me. So, I got creative. I first started writing for a few websites - mostly recaps of TV shows. Then I heard the term "virtual assistant" and I thought, hell, I can do that...so I started searching for gigs. I found a guy on Craigslist (this was before that could get you murdered) and started working for him. For about a year, it was just him, and then he had me post on HireMyMom.com for a position. I'd never heard of them before...so I signed up. Got a few more clients, and before you know it, my debt was down under $50k. Around that time, I met Marie Forleo. I worked with her for 2 years, doing basically anything that had to be done with the technical side of her business. I learned A LOT. Eventually, I started doing web design for more and more clients, and about 6 years ago, I transitioned to only doing web design and branding.
WHAT DO YOU SELL?
Intuitive Web Design & Branding
WHO IS YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE?
I do have a few male clients and local businesses, but primarily I work with women entrepreneurs who are seeking to infuse their personality into their websites. They have usually been in business for awhile, and while they are doing okay, they aren't doing great - and they realize it's because something in their branding is off.
WHAT 3 PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
Paying off $64k in credit card debt all by myself by starting my own business. Working with Marie Forleo and learning the ins and outs of internet marketing from the best. Paying my bills and surviving solely on my business with no "real" job for 12 years.
WHAT MAKES YOUR BUSINESS STORY UNIQUE?
I firmly believe that even though $64k in credit card debt sounds like the biggest mistake a person could make - it wasn't a mistake at all. If I hadn't done that, I wouldn't be where I am now. Everything really happens for a reason. Also, after my husband found out about the debt (I still had about $48K at that point), he almost left. But then he realized that I must be making some serious cash. This in turn encouraged him to leave a job he hated and eventually start his own business too. Now we both run our own businesses, and wouldn't have it any other way.
