Mompreneur Myths: Considerations That Aren’t True and You Shouldn’t Believe
The world of online businesses has taken off at a rampant speed with no signs of slowing down anytime soon! According to Pipe Candy, the US has 1.3 million e-commerce companies up and running and if you can imagine, a nice chunk of that number of e-commerce businesses is run by mompreneurs. This might be something hard to imagine if you’re one of those people who thinks that stay at home moms (SAHMs) only tend to their children… what people fail to realize is that so many SAHMs have ventured into entrepreneurship that the term “mompreneurs” was created. As a mompreneur, you’re not only wiping snotty noses and scheduling playdates but you’re also finding coverage for your business, building your clientele, and marketing to the world why they need your product… That’s a lot of responsibilities to take on but those are also the things people will either tell you upfront or you can look up that will help you better prepare for mompreneurship… but what about those considerations that no one will tell you about? More importantly, why won’t anyone talk about those considerations? For some reason, people only want to tell you the good things about being a mompreneur, from a successful point of view… but what about the point of view from when you’re in the trenches trying not to get discouraged? As a mother looking to venture into the world of mompreneurship, it’s important that you know the good things you’ll experience but it’s just as important to know the “not so good” side of things to help you make a better-informed decision on whether or not it’s a journey you’re willing to embark on before too much time and money is invested. Take a look at some of the biggest myths of mompreneurship that you should completely Ignore.
You’re Going to Have Plenty of Time to Spend With Your Kids
This is a misconception that lots of moms think are true and will actually quit their full-time jobs thinking this is what they’re going to experience. The thing is, yes, you’ll be at home with your kids but in order to run a successful home-based business, you’re going to have to treat it like one, meaning your children are going to be your biggest distraction. You’re going to have to find ways to stay focused while running your business. If you commuted to work, would you be breastfeeding your baby? Probably not… you might be able to pump in your office but you wouldn’t be able to breastfeed because your baby wouldn’t be with you. The truth of the matter is that if you want success with your home-based business, you’re not going to be spending as much time as you thought with your children.
You Can Work As Often As You Want and As Much As You Want
Okay, so this is technically true but if you’re speaking from a perspective of success, then no… you absolutely cannot work when and as often as you want… if you want your business to prosper. People tend to think that because you work from home that your work ethic can be a little more “laxed” and it really can’t. Your business will only get out of it what you put into it. So if you only put in five-hour workdays, you can’t expect to see success in any type of realistic time frame. If you want potential customers/clients to take your business seriously, you first have to start taking it seriously and put in the work required to achieve the level of success you want.
It’s Going to Get Lonely
Working from home, it’s important to know that it’s going to get lonely at times. Yes, your kids will be there with you but let’s face it, you can only talk to your three-year-old for so long before you desperately seek the attention of adult interaction. You, of course, have your spouse but while they’ve gone to work who else are you going to talk to? Loneliness is the very reason why livingfornaptime.com states that adult interaction is very important for SAHMs. You can seek interactions with various mommy groups in your area or take your little one to the park and engage in conversation with other parents at the park. But when you’re at home and your little one is sleeping, you’ll have the peace you’ve been wanting but it also will get lonely being left with your inner thoughts
You’re Going to Go “Stir-Crazy”
People don’t really think about the fact that you’re at home for the majority of the day and being at home working and tending to your kids can make you go a little stir-crazy. The fact that you’re able to work from the comfort of home is what makes mompreneurship sound so appealing, and it definitely is but it’s also a major adjustment that you’re going to have to get used to.
